In my day (1950s) it was as common as can be. No one thought anything about it at high school or the YMCA. Now it is all taboo. What a shame.

I never understood why some guys showered in there underwear. I was one of a few who showered naked and didn't have a problem with it. What I didn't like was the teasing because of my size, some of the other guys were very well equipped.

I never had to shower in PE. I did, however, have to shower after basketball games. Luckily I wasn't very good and often didn't play so I avoided the shower. Having a rather small dick, I was mortified to let anyone see it. If I had to shower, I'd go in last, get my hair wet, and leave. Often times never removing the towel from my waist.

I had to take swimming in school and you had to wear issued swim trunks that were not quite Speedos but were more like thick tight jockey shorts than swim trunks. Before getting in the pool, a shower was required. The gym was very old and the showers consisted of three circular columns in the center of the locker room with shower heads on them. So each gym period you stand naked shoulder to shoulder showering. I remember focusing intently on the shower head, but it was hard not to notice 30 guys gathered together showering. Would be fun to do that again.

After a few showers and some teasing someone told one of the cheerleaders about my size also. The girls didn't pick on me but I never dated anyone from my school either. It was a small school where everyone knew everything.

Back in my 1950s boarding school the showers were 6x showerheads with nil privacy screens.
It was a long established practice to accept the nudity as normal and erections were common. The school I went to was built in the 1930s and the changing rooms had never been updated. 30 lads squashed into a very small room. I went to a rugby playing school. I remember muddy showers and guys walking around the sports pavilion with full hard ons. Even though there was a woman who looked after the place. She would tell boys to put it away if she saw them hard.

It was the similar long 'galley' showers when I was a kid too. Like you say, nowhere to hide and a bit weird at first but you had no choice but to get used to it. Everyone was going to know what everyone else's junk looked like!

As any guy knows, at that age then boners can and will happen for any reason and at any time. The teasing anyone unfortunate to get one in the showers got was relentless. Fortunately it never quite happened to me, although had a few close calls and hasty lunges for the relative safety of a towel.

I'm led to believe its all a bit more private these days. To be honest I can never decide if that's a good thing or not. With the decidedly non-private arrangements of the past then you got to see you were just part of an big old range of shapes and sizes. If you aren't (literally) exposed to others then are any insecurities you might have just reinforced? Hang-ups are generally best confronted IMHO (for instance i've always thought the best thing to do if you have self-image issues is force yourself to go on a naturist beach once).
